What it’s like to work here
We want you to be able to make an informed decision on whether the Housing Ombudsman Service is the right place for you. So we asked some of our employees to share their thoughts and experiences of working here, which will give you an insight into everyday life here at HOS.
John – Adjudicator
As an adjudicator my role is primarily to deal with formal complaints and investigations that come to the Ombudsman. A typical day could involve writing an investigation report, discussing cases with colleagues, calling a complainant to ask for more information and calling a landlord to discuss how it might be able to resolve a complaint. I enjoy the flexibility we are given at HOS to decide how best to deal with each case. I also enjoy the opportunities that adjudicators are given to meet landlords and tenant organisations, and to speak at external events – all with a view to improving complaint handling and service delivery across the housing sector. There are opportunities working at HOS to use your own initiative and to really make a difference. I also welcome the flexible working arrangements which enable me to meet family and other personal commitments.
Shazia – Dispute Resolution Advisor
As a Dispute Resolution Advisor (DRA), the activities I engage in as part of my job vary from day to day. Most cases involve a lot of communication between the parties and we often have to deal with sensitive situations and vulnerable complainants. This does add to the complexity of our role but it also contributes immensely to job satisfaction as we are able to help those who are disadvantaged. Every case the DRAs handle is different from the next and we often deal with matters that are quite complicated. We work with other team members to establish the best possible outcome to the complaint. The office has a very respectful atmosphere and employees feel valued and appreciated. Relationships with senior staff are open and transparent and concerns are always addressed head on. There is a real drive within the organisation towards personal development and we are always encouraged to strive towards excellence and continuously improve our skills and capabilities.
Jerome – Corporate Services Officer
Working as a Corporate Services Officer at the Housing Ombudsman Service provides a fantastic opportunity to gain a broad range of knowledge and skills. Day to day, my role can consist of carrying out administrative and HR duties to maintaining supplier contracts, this alongside a vast host of other tasks. You can normally find me and others on the team collaborating with the whole office, making communication a key part of this role. The variation in workload accommodates challenge and interest which makes for an engaging working experience. Ultimately being a part of an organisation that provides such an exceptional and important service is incredibly rewarding.
